We caught up with Ben Consoli of BC Media Productions on finding creativity and being honest with yourself when starting a business. Ben graciously shares his story and plans for the future with us. Lets dive right in.

Can you sum up what you do in a few sentences?

I’m the founder and owner of BC Media Productions . A small but mighty production company based in Boston, MA. I am a director, but my background is in editing and shooting and I often flex those muscles as well. I also host and produce the Go Creative Show , a podcast for creative professionals in the film, television, music and creative industries.

Does Abstaining from Digital Media Increase Productivity? ZTC No Internet Video Challenge

Last week the ZTC weekly challenge was to see if we could go 5 days without watching digital media unless it was work related. Lets see how it went.

George’s Recap

I’ll be the first to admit our challenge last week was….WEAK. It was hard to keep track of on a daily basis since being bombarded by media is a regular part of our lives whether at work or home. For example my wife streams content to our television during dinner and it is impossible not to watch.

I want to make a more conscious effort to produce more and consume less so in this light our challenge was not a complete waste. Also there is no way for Ethan to call me out when I slip. Unlike the 5:30am challenge where we tweeted and texted at those exact times. Using a tool like Rescue Time would have helped but not for instances of checking stuff on your phone or TV.

I learned we can do better. This week our challenge will be SMART focused. We want our challenges to be easy for people to follow and join. Let us prepare for the week!

Ethan’s Recap

I got through the entire week with zero TV, video games, online tv, or movies, but I quickly realized how often media distracts us from our regular tasks. At least every hour, I received a YouTube link from someone. I suppressed my initial instinct to click these links. In the evening, I opted to read instead of watching TV. The last 5 days served to highlight one important truth – that productivity increases when we tune out other distractions. Keep that truth at the forefront of your mind and resist the urge to click on the low value emails and YouTube links.

This challenge also reminded me how valuable a good book can be on everyday creativity.

Does Waking Up At 5:30am Make You More Productive? ZTC 5:30am Wake Up Challenge

Ethan’s Journal

Day 1
I woke up with only 6.5 hours of sleep, but felt pretty good. I jumped immediately into planning my day. Literally, first thing, my finger tips touched the keyboard to input my tasks and time blocks for the day. Once I planned my day, I exercised with a body weight workout emphasizing chest. Felt really good. By 6:30am, I felt more awake than I normally would at 9am. Following exercise, I ate breakfast, showered, and jumped right into work with my blood flowing and fuel in my belly. The morning sped by as I completed tasks that had been on my “to do” list for days. After an incredibly productive morning (and early afternoon), I took a short nap around 2:30pm since I did not get a full night sleep before. After waking up, I ran two miles to get some blood flowing through my system and recharge me. Productivity shot up after the run and I completed some additional tough tasks left on my list. I worry about tomorrow, however, because it is 11:30pm and I am 3 drinks deep after a night of trivia. Hopefully, I’ll be able to function after 6 hours of sleep, but I may be in store for a rough day tomorrow.

This is an excerpt from The Art of Expressing The Human Body. Bruce Lee gives his good friend, John Little, some well needed motivation:

“Bruce had me up to three miles a day, really at a good pace. We’d run the three miles in twenty-one or twenty-two minutes. Just under eight minutes a mile [Note: when running on his own in 1968, Lee would get his time down to six-and-a half minutes per mile]. So this morning he said to me “We’re going to go five.” I said, “Bruce, I can’t go five. I’m a helluva lot older than you are, and I can’t do five.” He said, “When we get to three, we’ll shift gears and it’s only two more and you’ll do it.” I said “Okay, hell, I’ll go for it.” So we get to three, we go into the fourth mile and I’m okay for three or four minutes, and then I really begin to give out. I’m tired, my heart’s pounding, I can’t go any more and so I say to him, “Bruce if I run any more,” –and we’re still running-”if I run any more I’m liable to have a heart attack and die.” He said, “Then die.” It made me so mad that I went the full five miles. Afterward I went to the shower and then I wanted to talk to him about it. I said, you know, “Why did you say that?” He said, “Because you might as well be dead. Seriously, if you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it’ll spread over into the rest of your life. It’ll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level.”
