Does Waking Up At 5:30am Make You More Productive? ZTC 5:30am Wake Up Challenge

Ethan’s Journal

Day 1
I woke up with only 6.5 hours of sleep, but felt pretty good. I jumped immediately into planning my day. Literally, first thing, my finger tips touched the keyboard to input my tasks and time blocks for the day. Once I planned my day, I exercised with a body weight workout emphasizing chest. Felt really good. By 6:30am, I felt more awake than I normally would at 9am. Following exercise, I ate breakfast, showered, and jumped right into work with my blood flowing and fuel in my belly. The morning sped by as I completed tasks that had been on my “to do” list for days. After an incredibly productive morning (and early afternoon), I took a short nap around 2:30pm since I did not get a full night sleep before. After waking up, I ran two miles to get some blood flowing through my system and recharge me. Productivity shot up after the run and I completed some additional tough tasks left on my list. I worry about tomorrow, however, because it is 11:30pm and I am 3 drinks deep after a night of trivia. Hopefully, I’ll be able to function after 6 hours of sleep, but I may be in store for a rough day tomorrow.

Can you sum up what you do in one sentence?

I’m a web entrepreneur who enjoys launching new businesses with other talented folks .

What is the first thing you do when you wake up and what is the last thing you do before you go to bed?

First thing: I brush my teeth. Last thing: I read (books or iPad). Reading helps me wind down and fall asleep faster.

Ethan :

Hey George. Why are we so much more productive when we meet in person? Versus doing it on the phone or on a Google Hangout?

George :

I think in person makes us more accountable to get things done and we are able to bounce ideas off each other and iterate quickly. Also it is more of a commitment because we sacrifice time to drive to our meeting spot. We pay for the meeting with the drive time, so we need to get the most out of it.

Although I will say we have been getting a lot more productivity working with each other over Google Hangout. When we first started I don’t think we were too productive but with us doing it a few times a week it has gotten a lot better and I can see how this can be a viable option for virtual teams.

Phone is by far the worst. Great to chat but after we jump off accountability becomes an issue.
